Total Carat Weight Explained

Understand what a combined weight means—and what it does not tell you about visual scale.

Total carat weight describes the combined weight of multiple diamonds. It is not the weight of each individual stone.

01 · The distinction

One stone, or the complete piece.

ct describes the weight of one diamond or gemstone. ctw or tcw describes the combined weight of multiple stones in a piece or pair.

A 1.00 ctw pair of evenly matched studs may be approximately 0.50 ct per earring, but actual individual weights may vary. Product-specific specifications remain authoritative.

CTW is spread across every diamond; length, count and individual scale shape the result.

Coverage, ring size, stone count, shape and construction can all change total weight.

03 · How to compare

Weight belongs beside dimensions and construction.

The same CTW can look very different depending on the number of stones, their shapes and dimensions, and the length or coverage of the finished piece.

Compare CTW with individual-stone measurements, stone count, piece length or ring coverage, and setting architecture. Carat remains a measure of weight—not a guarantee of face-up size.
